Grads Earn Record $32M in Scholarships

Scholarships, grants and other monetary awards earned by this year's graduating seniors here exceed $32 million, shattering the previous record of $20.7 million earned by the Class of 2005. At the California Academy of Mathematics and Science, seniors earned more than $11.5 million in awards, including a $188,000 scholarship to MIT, $174,000 to Duke, $177,000 to Swarthmore, $157,000 to Carnegie Mellon, and $134,000 to Stanford.Five CAMS students earned admission to MIT, with others headed for Harvard, Caltech, Harvey Mudd, Princeton, UCLA, USC, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Pomona College, Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia and the Colorado School of Mines. Wilson Classical High School students earned $6.2 million and gained admission to all California State University and University of California campuses, including 19 students going to UCLA and 10 to UC Berkeley.Eight students from Wilson will attend USC, while others are headed to Bard College, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Northwestern, Stanford and Vanderbilt.In all, Wilson students were admitted to 154 colleges and universities in 38 states and Washington, D.C., Italy, Germany and South Africa.Two Wilson students were recognized as National Hispanic Scholars. Millikan High School students earned more than $3.4 million, including two full rides to CSULB.Acceptances included all CSU and UC schools, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, USC, Mount St. Mary's College, University of Hawaii, Texas A&M and Pepperdine. Poly High School students earned more than $3 million, including a $172,000 scholarship to Yale, a $148,000 award for USC, a $180,000 award to MIT and $120,000 to Brown.Poly students also earned acceptance to Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, Howard, George Washington University, University of Pennsylvania, John Cabot University in Rome, Johns Hopkins, Penn State, Princeton, UC Berkeley, UCLA and other UC campuses. Lakewood High School students earned more than $2.5 million, with acceptances to most UC campuses, Loyola Marymount, Chapman, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and Baylor. Jordan High School students earned nearly $2.3 million, including Gates Millennium Scholarships, and monetary awards to attend UC Berkeley, Morehouse and UC Santa Barbara.Other admissions included UCLA and UC San Diego. Cabrillo High School students earned more than $1.8 million, including a full ride to Stanford University.Acceptances included all CSU and UC campuses, Paine College, Clark-Atlanta, Bethune-Cookman, Spelman, Morehouse, Rutgers, Otis College of Art and Design, Webster University, University of Missouri, Hofstra University, Texas A&M and the University of Nevada. Renaissance High School for the Arts students earned nearly $1 million in scholarships, including a CSULB President's Scholarship.Acceptances included USC, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz and UC Irvine. Avalon High School students earned more than $82,000, including full rides to CSULB, a $4,000 Santa Catalina Island scholarship, and Phyllis Lowenthal Memorial Scholarships in memory of the former Avalon teacher. Reid High School students earned $16,500, and Educational Partnership High School Students (EPHS) earned $4,570.
